Jurisdictional Changes In The Los Angeles Superior Courts

In an effort to keep current with recent changes in the Los Angeles Superior Courts, The Shirvanian Law Firm, APLC reports that effective on or about March 18, 2013, significant jurisdictional changes will take place in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

First and foremost, personal injury matters in general jurisdiction will now be filed in the Central District.  As for real estate matters involving unlawful detainer and/or eviction matters, these cases will be filed at one of five Courts: Lancaster, Long Beach, Central, Pasadena, or Santa Monica; the property’s zip code and city will determine which Court the action will be filed in.

Furthermore, new small claims matters will now be filed in one of six Courts: Alhambra, Lancaster, Downey, Inglewood, Central, or Van Nuys.  The Court’s have advised that existing and already filed small claims matters will remain in the original Court until further notification is provided regarding a transfer of venue.

Collections cases have also been affected by these recent changes.  New limited civil collections cases will be filed either in the Chatsworth or Norwalk Courthouses.  As for new non-limited civil collections cases, these matters must be filed in the Central Courthouse.
